What is a dental crown?

A crown is a precision-made cap that covers a tooth entirely, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. It is the standard treatment for teeth that are cracked, heavily filled, broken, root-treated or too worn for a filling to fix, and it is also how an implant becomes a visible tooth.

At BlueMagic Group Dental Tirana, crowns are crafted in Ivoclar-Vita ceramics in three main options: monolithic zirconium from €216, the metal-free workhorse combining strength with natural translucency; E-max from €300, pressed lithium disilicate with outstanding aesthetics for visible front teeth; and laminate crowns from €324 for select cosmetic cases. Your dentist recommends the material per tooth, because a molar and a front incisor have different jobs.

How crown treatment works here

The tooth is prepared under local anaesthesia, decayed or weakened structure is removed and the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. Digital or conventional impressions go to the laboratory, the shade is matched against your natural teeth in daylight-balanced conditions, and the finished crown is tried in, adjusted and cemented. Most crown plans complete within a single visit to Tirana, over several days, thanks to in-house laboratory scheduling.

Preparing a tooth for a full crown removes enamel and is not reversible. Where a more conservative option, a filling, onlay, or bonding, would genuinely serve you, that is what we will recommend.

Candidacy

Do you need a crown?

Typically the right answer if…

  • A tooth is cracked, broken or heavily worn
  • An old large filling is failing and little healthy tooth remains
  • A tooth has had root canal treatment and needs protection
  • An implant needs its final visible tooth
  • A tooth is badly discoloured or misshapen beyond what veneers can fix

A different plan may be better if…

  • The damage is small, a filling (from €72) or cosmetic filling (from €204) preserves more tooth
  • The concern is purely colour, whitening may achieve it without touching the tooth
  • The tooth is loose from gum disease, foundations come first
  • The tooth is not restorable, extraction and an implant may be the honest route

Candidacy is always confirmed by the dental team through a review of your photos and X-rays, this list is general guidance, not a diagnosis.

Benefits and honest limitations

Benefits

  • Restores full chewing strength to a compromised tooth
  • Modern ceramics are indistinguishable from natural enamel
  • Protects cracked or root-treated teeth from fracture
  • From €216 per unit, quality materials at Tirana operating costs
  • Usually completed in a single visit to Tirana

Limitations

  • Tooth preparation is irreversible, enamel removed does not grow back
  • A crowned tooth still needs hygiene: decay can start at the margin
  • Crowns wear and age; 10–15 years is a realistic lifespan before remake
  • Rarely, a prepared tooth can later need root canal treatment

Treatment stages

Your crown visit, step by step

  1. 1

    Review & shade planning

Photos and X-rays reviewed; material chosen per tooth; shade matched with you in the chair.

    Day 1

  2. 2

    Preparation

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia and an impression is taken for the laboratory.

    Day 1

  3. 3

    Temporary protection

A temporary crown protects the prepared tooth while the laboratory works.

    Between visits

  4. 4

    Laboratory crafting

Your crown is milled or pressed in Ivoclar-Vita ceramic and finished by hand.

    2–4 days

  5. 5

    Try-in & fitting

Fit, contact points and shade checked with you, adjusted until right, then cemented.

    Final day

  6. 6

    Bite check

Occlusion verified and polished; care instructions handed over in writing.

    Final day

Recovery

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days after preparation is normal and settles.
  • With a temporary crown: avoid sticky and very hard foods on that side.
  • After cementation: eat normally the same day once anaesthesia wears off.
  • Any persistent high spot in your bite is a five-minute adjustment, tell us before you fly.

Risks, honestly

Crown treatment is routine dentistry with a long safety record, but honesty requires the full picture: preparation permanently removes tooth structure; a small percentage of prepared teeth develop pulp irritation that later needs root canal treatment; and crown margins remain vulnerable to decay if hygiene lapses. Ceramic can chip under extreme load, night guards (from €72) are recommended for patients who grind.

Questions

Dental crowns, frequently asked questions

How long does a crown take in Tirana?

Most crown plans complete in a single visit of several days: preparation and impressions early in the stay, laboratory crafting mid-stay, and fitting before you fly. Larger smile plans may need a few extra days, your written plan states the exact schedule.

Does the preparation hurt?

It is done under local anaesthesia and most patients describe it as no more eventful than a large filling. Some temperature sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal.

Zirconium or E-max, which should I choose?

You do not have to choose alone. As a rule of thumb: zirconium for strength in the back of the mouth and full arches, E-max for maximum light-play on front teeth. The team recommends per tooth and explains why.

How long will my crown last?

A realistic expectation is 10–15 years, often longer with good hygiene and check-ups. What shortens crown life is decay at the margin and heavy grinding, both manageable with care and, where needed, a night guard.

Is a crowned tooth dead?

No. Most crowned teeth keep their living nerve. Only teeth that needed root canal treatment beforehand are non-vital, and the crown is what protects those from fracture.

Can crowns be whitened later?

No, ceramic does not respond to whitening. If you plan to whiten your natural teeth, do it before crowns are made, so the new shade can be matched to the brighter baseline.
