What root canal treatment is
Inside every tooth runs a small chamber of nerve and blood vessels, the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or trauma lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed and then infected, producing the throbbing, sleep-stealing pain root canals are famous for. The treatment removes the infected tissue, disinfects the canal system, and seals it, keeping your natural tooth where an extraction would leave a gap.
Modern root canal treatment under proper local anaesthesia feels much like a long filling appointment. The agony people associate with the phrase is the toothache before treatment, not the treatment itself, which is what ends it.
Why saving the tooth matters
A root-treated natural tooth preserves your bite, your bone and your budget. Extraction may look cheaper on the day, but the empty space invites neighbouring teeth to drift, bone to shrink, and eventually an implant (from €432) plus crown to be needed anyway. Risks, honestly
First-time root canal treatments enjoy high published success rates, but no endodontic treatment carries a guarantee: canal anatomy can hide branches, and a sealed tooth can occasionally reinfect years later, needing retreatment (from €192 for complicated cases) or, ultimately, extraction. A treated tooth also becomes more brittle, skipping the protective crown to save money is the most common way patients turn a saved tooth into a lost one. Is a root canal painful?

How many visits does it take?
Simple cases finish in one appointment; complex anatomy or heavy infection sometimes needs two. Both fit comfortably within a normal Tirana stay.
Do I really need a crown afterwards?
For back teeth, almost always. A root-treated tooth is more brittle, and chewing forces crack unprotected ones. The crown is not an upsell, it is how the saved tooth stays saved.
Can a root canal fail?
