Why gums come first
Gum disease is the most common chronic disease in dentistry and the least dramatic-feeling: gums that bleed when brushing, breath that will not freshen, teeth that slowly loosen. Underneath, bacterial deposits below the gumline inflame the tissues and quietly dissolve the bone holding your teeth, the same bone implants would one day need.
That is why gum health is stage one of every serious treatment plan. Implants placed into diseased gums inherit the disease as peri-implantitis. Crowns cemented over inflamed margins trap the problem. Treating the gums first is not an upsell before the treatment you came for, it is the difference between results that last and results that photograph well briefly.

After deep cleaning, gums are typically tender for a day or two and may recede slightly as swelling resolves, which can expose root surfaces and cause temporary temperature sensitivity. These are signs of healing, not harm. The honest limitations: lost bone does not regrow with cleaning alone, smokers respond measurably worse, and everything gained can be lost again without daily home care. Gum treatment, frequently asked questions
My gums bleed when I brush. Is that serious?
Bleeding gums are inflamed gums, the earliest and most reversible stage of gum disease. Treated now, it usually resolves with a professional cleaning and better home care. Ignored, it can progress to bone loss. Early is cheap; late is not.
Does deep cleaning hurt?
Curettage is performed under local anaesthesia; you feel pressure rather than pain. Expect tenderness and some sensitivity for a day or two afterwards.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gingivitis, yes, fully reversible. Periodontitis is controlled rather than cured: treatment stops the progression, and maintenance keeps it stopped. Bone already lost does not return with cleaning alone.
Why must gums be treated before implants?
Because the bacteria that cause gum disease attack the tissues around implants just as happily, the condition is called peri-implantitis, and it is harder to treat than gum disease around teeth. Healthy foundations first is not a slogan; it is implant survival strategy.
Will my receded gums grow back?
Usually not by themselves, the realistic goals are stopping further recession and, in selected cases, surgical coverage. We will tell you honestly which category your recession falls into.
How does smoking affect my gums?
Smoking restricts gum blood supply, masks bleeding (hiding the warning sign), and roughly doubles down on every risk in periodontal treatment. We treat smokers, with honest expectations attached.
